Service Area Pages Without the Spam
Many businesses travel to customers: plumbers, cleaners, landscapers, mobile mechanics, and more. They want to appear in searches for each town they cover. The temptation is to create dozens of near-identical pages, one per place, with only the town name changed. This approach is widely considered spam and rarely works well. Here is a better way.
Why spammy pages fail
Pages that repeat the same text with different place names offer visitors nothing new. Search engines are skilled at spotting this pattern, and low-value pages can drag down the perceived quality of a whole site. They may also confuse customers who find them.
Start with real service areas
Only create pages for areas you genuinely serve and want work from. Consider how far you will travel and where your best customers come from. Quality over quantity.
Make each page genuinely different
A strong service area page includes details specific to that place:
- Local project examples, with photos and short descriptions of jobs you did there
- Customer testimonials from people in the area
- Specific information, such as local regulations, common issues with housing in the area, or typical timings
- Travel and availability details, such as how quickly you can reach the area
- Pricing or call-out information if it differs
- Local landmarks or neighborhoods that show real familiarity
If you cannot write something specific, a dedicated page may not be warranted.
Consider a single area page first
If you cover a region, one well-written page listing the towns you serve, with a short paragraph on each, may be better than many weak pages. Create separate pages only for the areas where you have enough to say.
Structure and link them well
Use clean URLs such as /areas/bristol/ and add a main "Areas we serve" page linking to each. Connect to relevant services using internal links.
Set up your Google Business Profile properly
Use the service area setting instead of a fake address. See setting up your profile. Do not list virtual offices or addresses where you do not operate.
Use keywords naturally
Include the place in the title and main heading, but write like a person. See local keywords.
Keep them fresh
Update pages with new projects and reviews so they stay relevant. This fits well in your content update routine.
If you have physical branches
Use location pages instead for real addresses.
The bottom line
Create service area pages only where you can add real value, and fill them with local proof and detail. Fewer, richer pages beat a pile of duplicates.
